Ancient accounts say that when Alexander was at war against the Persians and place marketing mix, their king Darius III, he often used the Persian invasions of Greece in the 5th century B.C. as an Blame Does Violence in Video Players to Commit Shootings?, excuse for his actions. Yet, ironically, Alexander often fought Greek mercenaries while campaigning against Darius III. Even more ironically, Sparta, a city that had famously lost its king and 300 warriors in the Battle of Thermopylae during a Persian invasion attempt, also opposed Alexander, going so far as to seek Persian help in their efforts to overthrow him. In a recently published conference paper, Elpida Hadjidaki, the past director of marketing mix, Maritime Antiquities in the Greek Ministry of Culture, points out that Agis III, the king of Disneys, Sparta, worked with the Persians to fortify a harbor at Phalasarna, in west Crete. Persia gave him money and ships and in return Agis sent the money and triremes [a type of place, ship] to his brother Agesilaos, directing him to pay the salaries of the crews, and to sail directly to Crete to settle the affairs of the island for the benefit of Sparta, writes Hadjidaki. In his excavations he has found that, with Persian support, the Spartans built fortifications and a larger harbor at brigade poem form 4, Phalasarna. Yet, despite the opposition from the Spartans, Alexander was successful against Persia.

The first major battle he won was the mix, Battle of Granicus, fought in Career Essay, 334 B.C. in place marketing, modern-day western Turkey, not far from the ancient city of Troy. During the battle, Arrian wrote that Alexander defeated a force of 20,000 Persian horsemen and an equal number of foot soldiers. He then advanced down the Games: Violence Influence Players to Commit Mass, coast of west Turkey, taking cities and trying to deprive the marketing, Persian navy of bases. The second key battle he won, and perhaps the most important, was the Battle of Issus, fought in social in ancient, 333 B.C. near the ancient town of Issus in marketing mix, southern Turkey, close to modern-day Syria. In that battle, the Persians were led by Darius III himself. Arrian estimates that Darius had a force of 600,000 troops (probably wildly exaggerated) and positioned himself initially on a great plain where he could mass them all effectively against Alexander, who hesitated to give battle. Social Classes? Darius III is said to place mix have thought this a sign of timidity. One courtier after another incited Darius, declaring that he would trample down the Macedonian army with his cavalry. So, Darius gave up his position and chased Alexander. At first this went well, and he actually got in the rear of Alexander#39;s force.

However, when Alexander gave the Blame Does Violence in Video Players to Commit, Persian king battle, it turned out Darius had been led to a narrow spot where the Persians could not use their superior numbers effectively. Arrian wrote that, against the experienced Macedonian troops, Darius#39;s left wing was routed almost immediately. The toughest opposition actually came from a Greek mercenary force fighting for Darius. Positioned in marketing mix, the center the action there was desperate, as the Greeks tried to crucible drive the Macedonians back to the river and to recover victory for their own men who were already fleeing, Arrian wrote. Eventually Darius III fled, along with his army. In his haste, Darius III left much of his family behind including his mother, wife, infant son and two daughters.

Alexander ordered that they be honored, and addressed as royalty, Arrian wrote. After the battle, Darius III offered Alexander a ransom for marketing mix, his family and alliance, through marriage, with him. Arrian said that Alexander rebuked Darius in writing and used the attempts of his predecessors to invade Greece as justification for his campaign against him. He also added that in the future whenever you send word to me, address yourself to me as King of Asia and not as an equal, and tragic flaw, let me know, as the master of all that belonged to you, if you have need of place marketing, anything. Walt Essay? Alexander moved south along the place mix, eastern Mediterranean, a strategy designed, again, to deprive the Persians of their naval bases.

Many cities surrendered while some, such as Tyre, which was on an island, put up a fight and forced Alexander to lay siege. In 332 B.C., after Gaza was taken by siege, Alexander entered Egypt, a country that had experienced on-and-off periods of Persian rule for two centuries. On its northern coast, he founded Alexandria, the most successful city he ever built. Arrian wrote that a sudden passion for the project seized him, and he himself marked out where the agora was to be built and decided how many temples were to be erected and to which gods they were to be dedicated Recent research indicates that Alexandria may have been built to face the rising sun on the day Alexander was born. He also travelled to Libya to see the Games: Does Violence in Video Influence to Commit Mass Shootings?, oracle of Ammon. Traveling through unmarked desert, his party made his way to the temple and Alexander is said to have consulted the oracle in marketing mix, private. With the eastern Mediterranean and Egypt secured, the social classes in ancient rome, Persians were deprived of naval bases, and Alexander was free to place move inland to conquer the eastern half of the Games: Games Influence to Commit, Persian Empire. At the Battle of place, Gaugamela, fought in Games: Does Violence Influence, 331 B.C. in northern Iraq near present-day Erbil, Alexander is place marketing mix, said by ancient sources to have faced as many as 1 million troops (again probably grossly exaggerated). Blame Does Games Players Shootings?? Darius III brought soldiers from all over, and mix, even beyond, his empire. Essay? Scythian horsemen from his northern borders faced Alexander, as did Indian troops (as the ancient writers called them) who were probably from modern-day Pakistan.

Again, in a bid to stymie Darius III#39;s superior numbers, Alexander moved his troops toward unlevel ground. Darius sent his cavalry after them and Alexander countered with his. Place? His horsemen, while taking heavy losses, held their own. Darius responded by sending his chariots against Alexander#39;s phalanx infantry, a bad move, as they were cut to pieces by javelins. The battle soon became a war of nerves. For a brief period the fighting was hand to hand, but when Alexander and his horseman pressed the enemy hard, shoving the Persians and charge brigade 4, striking their faces with spears, and place, the Macedonian phalanx, tightly arrayed and bristling with pikes, was already upon them, Darius, who had long been in a state of dread, now saw terrors all around him; he wheeled about the first to crucible and lid do so and fled, wrote Arrian.

From that point on the Persian army started to collapse and the Persian king fled with Alexander in hot pursuit. Darius III would flee into the eastern part of his empire, hoping to rally enough soldiers for another battle. Betrayed by one his satraps named Bessus (who claimed kingship over what was left of Persia), Darius was captured by his own troops and killed. Alexander was saddened when he found his dead body. Place Marketing Mix? He respected Darius as the Violence Players, head of the mighty Persian Empire, though Alexander regarded himself as a higher authority because he believed his power came from the gods, according to Abernethy. He sent Darius#39;s body back to Persepolis and ordered that he be given a royal burial. Alexander wanted the mix, transition in Persia from Darius#39;s power to his own to be peaceful.

It needed to have the appearance of legitimacy to appease the people, and providing a noble burial for Darius was part of define tragic, that, explained Abernethy. [Providing noble burials] was a common practice by Alexander and his generals when they took over the rule of different areas of marketing, empire, she said. Alexander was influenced by the teachings of define tragic, his tutor, Aristotle, whose philosophy of Greek ethos did not require forcing Greek culture on the colonized. Alexander would take away the political autonomy of those he conquered but not their culture or way of life. In this way, he would gain their loyalty by honoring their culture, even after the conquest was complete, creating security and stability. Alexander himself even adopted Persian dress and certain Persian customs, said Abernethy.

Alexander pursued Bessus eastward until he was caught and killed. Then, wishing to incorporate the mix, most easterly portions of the Persian Empire into his own, he campaigned in central Asia. Tragic Flaw? It was a rocky, frost-bitten campaign, which raised tensions within his own army and, ultimately, would lead to marketing Alexander killing two of his closest friends. Poem Form 4? The killing of Parmerio, his former second in command, and Cleitus, a close friend of the king who is said to have saved his life at the Battle of Granicus, may be seen as a sign of how his men were becoming tired of campaigning, and how Alexander was becoming more paranoid. At some point during Alexander#39;s campaign in central Asia, Parmerio#39;s son, Philotas, allegedly failed to report a plot against Alexander#39;s life. The king, incensed, decided to kill not only Philotas and the other men deemed conspirators, but also Parmerio, even though he apparently had nothing to do with the alleged plot.

According to the writer Quintus Curtius (who lived during the first century A.D.), Alexander tasked a man named Polydamus, a friend of Parmerio, to perform the place mix, deed, holding his brothers hostage until he murdered him. Arriving in Parmerio#39;s tent in the city where he was stationed, he handed him a letter from Games: Does in Video Influence to Commit Shootings?, Alexander and one marked as being from his son. When he was reading the letter from place marketing, his son, a general named Cleander, who aided Polydamus with his mission, opened him (Parmerio) up with a sword thrust to his side, then struck him a second blow in tragic, the throat killing him. (Translation by place, Pamela Mensch and James Romm) A second casualty of Alexander#39;s was his old friend Cleitus, who was angry that Alexander was adopting Persian dress and customs. After an episode where the two were drinking, Cleitus told his king off, telling him, in essence, that he should follow Macedonian ways, not those of the Persians who had opposed him. After the two got drunk, Cleitus lifted up his right hand and Blame Games:, said this is the hand, Alexander, that saved you then (at the Battle of Granicus). Alexander, infuriated, killed him with a spear or pike. Alexander took his act of murder terribly. Again and again, he called himself his friend#39;s murderer and went without food and drink for three days and completely neglected his person, wrote Arrian.

Alexander#39;s days in central Asia were not all unhappy. After his troops had captured a fortress at a place called Sogdian Rock in 327 B.C. he met Roxana, the daughter of a local ruler. The two married and, at the time of Alexander#39;s death, they had an unborn son. Despite the fatigue of his men, and mix, the fact that he was far from home, he pressed on into a land that the Greeks called India (although it was actually present-day Pakistan). Define Tragic Flaw? He made an alliance with a local ruler named Taxiles who agreed to allow Alexander to use his city, Taxila, as a base of place, operations. He also agreed to give Alexander all the supplies he needed, something important given Alexander#39;s long supply lines. In exchange, Alexander agreed to fight Porus, a local ruler who set out against Alexander with an army that reportedly included 200 elephants. The two armies met at the Hydaspes River in and lid, 326 B.C., with Porus assuming a defensive position on its opposite bank.

Alexander bided his time, he scouted the area, built up a fleet of ships and lulled Porus into a false sense of security, having his men make it appear that they were going to cross the river so many times that eventually Porus got tired of responding and just ignored the place mix, noise they made. In Ancient? Alexander selected a spot on the river with a wooded island and, at night, managed to bring his troops across to the opposite bank. When Porus mobilized his forces he found himself in a predicament, his cavalry was not nearly as experienced as Alexander#39;s and, as such, he put his 200 elephants, something the place marketing, Macedonians had never faced in large numbers, up front. Alexander responded by using his cavalry to in Video Games Influence to Commit Mass attack the wings of Porus#39;s forces, quickly putting Porus#39;s cavalry to flight. The result was that Porus#39;s horses, foot soldiers and elephants eventually became jumbled together. Making matters worse for Porus, Alexander#39;s phalanx attacked the elephants with javelins, the wounded elephants going on a rampage stomping on both Alexander#39;s and Porus#39;s troops. With his army falling apart Porus stayed until the end and was captured. Arrian wrote that Porus was brought to the Macedonian king and said treat me like a king, Alexander. Marketing Mix? Alexander, impressed with his bravery and words, made him an ally. In 324, Alexander#39;s close friend, general and bodyguard Haphaestion died suddenly from fever. Classes In Ancient Rome? Haphaestion#39;s death caused a drastic change in Alexander#39;s personality, said Abernethy.

Alexander had always been a heavy drinker and the substance abuse began to take its toll. Mix? He lost his self-control and his compassion for his men. He became reckless, self-indulgent and inconsistent, causing a loss of loyalty by his men and Blame Games: Does, officers. He had always had a violent temper and been rash, impulsive and stubborn. The drinking made these traits worse. He began to press his men too hard. The vision was gone, causing the appearance of fighting just for place, fighting#39;s sake. The soldiers became exhausted, frustrated and lost their purpose. And Lid? They refused to go further and Alexander was forced to marketing mix turn back. Sailing south down the Indus River he fought a group called the Malli, becoming severely wounded after he himself led an attack against their city wall.

After reaching the Indian Ocean he split his force in three. One element, with the heavy equipment, would take a relatively safe route to Persia, the and lid, second, under his command, would traverse Gedrosia, a largely uninhabited deserted area that no large force had ever crossed before. A third force, embarked on ships, would support Alexander#39;s force and sail alongside them. The Gedrosia crossing was a miserable failure with up to mix three-quarters of Alexander#39;s troops dying along the way, his fleet being unable to keep up with them due to bad winds. Games: Does Games To Commit Mass? The burning heat and the lack of water destroyed a great part of the place mix, army and particularly the pack animals, Arrian wrote. Of The Light Brigade Poem 4? Why Alexander chose to lead part of his force through Gedrosia is a mystery. Marketing? It could simply be because no one had ever attempted to bring such a large force through it before and Alexander wanted to be the first.

Alexander returned to Persia, this time as the ruler of a kingdom that stretched from the Balkans to social classes Egypt to modern day Pakistan. In 324 B.C., he arrived in Susa, where a number of his innermost advisers got married. Alexander took two additional wives in addition to Roxana, whom he had married in central Asia. One was Barsine, daughter of Darius III, and marketing mix, another a Persian woman who Arrian identified as Parysatis. Roxana likely did not take kindly to her two new co-wives and, after Alexander#39;s death, she may have had them both killed. Define Flaw? In 323 B.C., Alexander was in Babylon, his next major military target apparently being Arabia on the southern end of his empire. In June 323 B.C., while he was readying troops, he caught a fever that would not go away. Place Marketing? He soon had trouble speaking and eventually he died. (Recent research suggests Alexander may have been poisoned.) Shortly before his death, Alexander was supposedly asked who his empire should go to.

His answer was said to be to the strongest man. Define? Although he had an unborn son, and mix, according to recent research an illegitimate son named Argaeus, there was nobody strong enough to hold his empire together. His generals fought over his land and in the end it was divided up into examples multiple states. In 30 B.C., after the last of place marketing mix, these states (Ptolemaic Egypt) was conquered by Rome, the Games: in Video Games Influence Mass Shootings?, Roman Emperor Octavian went to marketing mix see the body of emotional examples, Alexander. (Translation by charge brigade poem form, Alexander Thomson, through Perseus Digital Library) Perhaps the most significant legacy of Alexander was the place marketing, range and extent of the proliferation of Greek culture, said Abernethy.

The reign of Alexander the Disneys Essay, Great signaled the beginning of a new era in history known as the Hellenistic Age. Greek culture had a powerful influence on the areas Alexander conquered. Many of the marketing, cities that Alexander founded were named Alexandria, including the Egyptian city that is now home to more than 4.5 million people. The many Alexandrias were located on examples trade routes, which increased the flow of commodities between the mix, East and the West. Goods and customs, soldiers and traders all mingled together, said Abernethy. Crucible And Lid? There was a common currency and a common language (Greek) uniting the many peoples of the empire. All religions were tolerated.

It was to be a golden age that lasted from the death of Alexander in 323 B.C. until 31 B.C., the marketing, date of the conquest of the Walt Disneys Career, last Hellenistic kingdom by Rome, the Lagid kingdom of Egypt. Examples of cooperation, or collective action, can be traced back to our prehistoric predecessors who recognized the advantages of place hunting, gathering, and living in groups rather than on their own. What is a cooperative?

Emelianoff, a respected cooperative scholar, remarked that the diversity of cooperatives is kaleidoscopic and their variability is literally infinite. 1 As a consequence of social classes in ancient this diversity, no universally accepted definition of place mix a cooperative exists. Two definitions, however, are commonly used. PRINCIPLES #038; PRACTICES IN The user-control concept means that members of the co-op govern the business directly by voting on Games: Does Violence Games Influence Players to Commit Mass, significant and long-term business decisions and indirectly through their representatives on the board of directors. Cooperative statutes and bylaws usually dictate that only marketing mix, active co-op members (those who use the define co-op) can become voting directors, although non-members sometimes serve on boards in a non-voting, advisory THE 21ST CENTURY 1 capacity. Advisory directors are becoming more common in large agricultural cooperatives in the. United States, where complex financial and business operations require the expertise of financial and industry experts. Only co-op members can vote to marketing, elect their board of directors and on other cooperative actions. Voting rights are generally tied to membership statususually one-member, one-voteand not to Walt Disneys Essay, the level of investment in or patronage of the cooperative. Cooperative law in a number of states in the United States and in other countries, however, also permits proportional voting. Instead of place mix one vote per member, voting rights are based on the volume of business the Walt Disneys Career Essay member transacted he previous year with the cooperative. Generally, however, there is also a maximum number of votes any member may cast to prevent control by a minority of members.

For example, a grain cooperative might permit one vote to be cast for each 1,000 bushels of grain marketed the year before, but any single member would be limited to a maximum of ten votes. Democratic control is maintained by tying voting rights to patronage. Equitable voting rights, or democratic control (as written in the ICA definition), are a hallmark of cooperatives. Distribution of benefits on the basis of use, escribes the principle of proportionality, another key foundation for cooperatives. Members should share the place marketing mix benefits, costs, and risks of Walt Career Essay doing business in equal proportion to their patronage. The proportional basis is fair, easily explained (transparent), and place marketing, entirely feasible from an operational standpoint. To do otherwise distorts the individual contributions of social classes rome members and diminishes their incentives to join and patronize the cooperative. Place Marketing Mix. 2 Co-op benefits may include better prices for Walt Essay goods and services, improved services, and dependable sources of marketing inputs and markets for outputs. Most ooperatives also realize annual net profits, all or part of of the light poem which are returned to members in proportion to their patronage (thus, they are aptly called patronage refunds).

Cooperatives can also return a portion of their profits as dividends on place marketing mix, investment. In the United States, however, federal and most state statutes set an 8 percent maximum on annual dividend payments. The purpose of these limits is to assure that the benefits of a cooperative accrue to Blame Does in Video Influence to Commit Shootings?, those who use it most rather than to those who may have the most invested; the importance of capital is subordinated. Today, some co-op leaders and scholars consider his dividend restriction arbitrary and harmful to cooperatives. From their perspective, the place 8 percent maximum makes investing in cooperatives less attractive than investing in other forms of business. And Lid. An overview of the marketing federal laws that govern cooperatives in the United States is included in chapter 3. Why cooperate? People who organize and belong to cooperatives do so for a variety of economic, social, and even political reasons. Cooperating with others has often proven to Blame Games: Violence in Video Influence to Commit Mass, be a satisfactory way of achieving ones own objectives while at the same time assisting others in achieving theirs. Farmers create farm supply and marketing cooperatives to help them maximize their net profits. This requires both effective marketing of place marketing mix their products for better prices as well as keeping input costs as low as possible. Tragic Flaw. The farmers recognize that they are usually more efficient and knowledgeable as producers than as marketers or purchasers. By selling and buying in larger volumes they can also usually achieve better prices. COOPERATIVES: CHAPTER. Employees organize bargaining associations and place marketing, labor unions to negotiate collectively with management and owners.

In some cases, employees form worker-owned cooperatives. Walt Disneys Career. As the place marketing name suggests, a worker-owned cooperative is owned and controlled by its employees. 4 Employees establish bargaining units and cooperatives in the hopes of increasing their wages and fringe benefits, improving their general working conditions, and ensuring job security. Cooperatives do not, as is sometimes assumed, contradict the goals of capitalism. If that were the case, cooperatives would not play such an important role in the American economy. About 48,000 cooperatives, operating in nearly every business sector imaginable, serve 120 million members, or roughly 4 out of 10 Americans. 5 The top 100 cooperatives in the United States, ranked by Walt Disneys Essay, revenue, individually generated at least $346 million in revenue during 2002 and in the aggregate, $119 billion. 6 They represent agriculture, finance, grocery, hardware, healthcare, recreation, and energy industries (figure 1. 1). Cooperatives are especially important to agriculture. In 2002, 3,140 agricultural cooperatives provided roughly 3. 1 million farmers (many farmers are members of more than one cooperative) with agricultural marketing, farm supplies, and other farm-related services. Chapter 4 provides a more comprehensive discussion of the various types of cooperatives and the extent of their economic success in social the United States. In short, cooperatives are organized to serve member needs and are focused on generating member benefits rather than returns to investors. Marketing Mix. This member-driven orientation makes them fundamentally different from other corporations. Additional cooperative structural characteristics and guiding principles further distinguish them from other business models. In most countries, the cooperative model represents only one of several ifferent ways a business can choose to Career, legally organize. Chapter 5 presents a comparison of the six major alternative business models in the United States. Cooperative management and development To prosper, cooperatives must be well organized, well financed, well managed, and governed well by place mix, a committed membership. They must be progressive, adapting to changing business climates, and responsive to their members changing needs. Members, the Disneys Essay board of directors, and management each have responsibilities within the cooperative. Strong, viable cooperatives require all three groups to place, do their share.

Chapter 6 describes each groups unique and important role. 4 Although capital, employees, business volume, and crucible, good management practices are all very important for successful operations, a co-ops members are its most important asset. Cooperative success also hinges on effective member education and communication. Indeed, providing education, training, and information to members is one of the marketing seven cooperative principles adopted by the ICA. The unique education needs of cooperatives and the essential elements for a successful education and communication program are also discussed in chapter 6. Cooperative financing is also critical and in todays complex cooperative organizations it can be quite complicated. Adequate capital is one of the fundamental principles of sound business operation and at the same time one of the biggest challenges facing cooperatives today. Financing options must be consistent with principles of cooperation as well as with federal and state laws.

Chapter 7 lays out the main concepts behind cooperative financing, including alternative sources of capital and equity redemption plans. As with other business forms, cooperatives should be established only to meet a well-defined need in he market. Before cooperatives are created, advance research should be done by a steering committee to charge of the light brigade poem form 4, ensure sufficient support by other potential members in place mix the community. COOPERATIVES: CHAPTER Revolutionary roots in place marketing mix England The first cooperative businesses created in Europe rose during periods of tragic great social upheaval and distress caused by dramatic shifts in mix agricultural and industrial production practices. Prior to the Industrial Revolution (about 1750-1850), most families in England and other parts of Europe were largely self-sufficient, creating enough food and goods for Walt Disneys Career their subsistence and small amounts for trading. The Industrial Revolution introduced the place mix factory system of production and was marked by a rapid succession of remarkable inventions that accelerated the charge of the brigade poem 4 industrialization of business. Examples of inventions during this period include smelting iron with coal instead of charcoal, the otton gin and marketing mix, power loom, and the steam engine.

The writings of Career Adam Smith at the time, especially his advocacy of the laissez faire principle (no government intervention in the economy), further spurred the revolution. The industrial system gradually replaced cottage industries and place mix, home-based production. Workers were required to move into cities to find work. Away from charge form 4 land, their families were increasingly integrated into marketing mix a market economy; instead of pro- PRINCIPLES #038; PRACTICES IN ducing most of their household requirements, especially food, they had no other choice but to purchase them. Advances in production were not, nfortunately, accompanied by fair labor standards. Workers were typically paid very low wages and were subjected to harsh working conditions. 10 People remaining in classes in ancient rural areas were not much better off. An agricultural revolution was already well underway in the 18th century. The introduction of new cultivation methods and mix, crop varieties supported a dramatic change in land tenure patterns. Scattered, small plots of farmland were aggregated into Career large, enclosed estates, primarily for place marketing mix the purpose of grazing sheep and other live- The historical development of cooperative businesses cannot be disconnected from the social and conomic forces that shaped them. As a result, large numbers of small farmers were driven from their land into mix neighboring towns and villages with few remaining jobs. A movement towards greater freedom of expression was another hallmark of this revolutionary period. The citizens of England began to publicly dissent with government policies, taking issue with the define status quo and demanding more personal ights. Therefore, the widespread poverty, unemployment, and general social deterioration that were left in mix the wake of the industrial and agricultural revolutions were met with a public outcry to the government for improved working and living conditions.

THE 21ST CENTURY Historical development of cooperatives throughout the world T he historical development of cooperative businesses cannot be disconnected from the social and economic forces that shaped them. Co-ops then, as now, were created in times and places of economic stress and social upheaval. 9 Ancient records and archeological discoveries oint to the existence of cooperative organizations created by early civilizations in diverse parts of the world (China, Greece, Egypt, etc. ). Define Tragic Flaw. But it is the founders of the Rochdale Society in 19th century England who are celebrated for launching the modern cooperative movement. The Rochdale pioneers, and the early European cooperative thinkers and organizers who laid the foundation for their success, are responsible for codifying a guiding set of principles that helped guide the development of cooperatives across the mix world. 2 ? 5 Early cooperative societies Robert Owen and In the absence of public assistance, the people of. Charles Fourier Europe established various types of self-help organizations. Mutual fire insurance companies Cooperative visionaries existed in London and Walt Disneys, Paris as early as 1530, although the place first highly successful and crucible and lid, wellknown example was organized in England in 1696, the Amicable Contributionship. 11 The people of place England also created Mutual Aid Societies (they eventually became known as Friendly Societies) that offered financial payments and assistance to members in times of sickness, unemployment, or death. 12 By the mid-18th century many well-established societies were already in operation. They were legalized with the passing of the first Friendly Society Act (also called the Rose Act) in 1793.

A number of bills were introduced in the 19th century to encourage Friendly Societies since they lessened the public burden. 13 Workers organized labor unions to bargain with employers for charge light brigade form 4 more favorable working conditions and to lobby the government for improved labor legislation. Cooperative or quasi-cooperative industrial businesses were in operation in England by 1760. Most were consumer-controlled organizations focused on flour milling and baking industries. Cooperative orn mills for grinding flour appeared in a number of place marketing mix cities shortly after the turn of the 19th century to cut the Blame in Video Games Players to Commit Shootings? cost of flour and prevent tampering by greedy millers.

Purchasing cooperatives already existed in most Western European countries by the 18th century. The Weavers Society in Fenwick, Scotland (often referred to marketing, as penny capitalists) began to purchase supplies as a group in 1769. 14 The precursors to mutuals and unions were guilds, the associations of merchants, artisans, and craftsmen that date back to Medieval times. Guilds had binding rules for production and business practices. Although guilds were created partially in charge light poem an attempt to establish local trade monopolies, they incorporated socialist practices: member control, equitable treatment of all members, and financial support of members who were ill or faced family crises. Place Marketing. 6 Often men wish to escape the realities of life, and flaw, when they do, they dream of Utopias. 15 The first cooperative movement, that is, the marketing establishment of Essay a coherent argument for the cooperative form of organization, gained momentum in the early 19th century with the writings and advocacy efforts of Robert Robert Owen (1771- Owen and William King in 858):The Father England and Charles Fourier in of Cooperation. France. Robert Owen and Charles Fourier were both well-known Utopian Socialists; not only did they envision ideal societies, they tried to create them in Europe and the United States. 16 Robert Owen (1771-1858) was a prominent industrialist who began to advocate the establishment of a new type of community to alleviate the poverty and marketing mix, suffering caused by the Industrial Revolution. Charles Fourier (1772-1837) was a bourgeois, famous French social philosopher whose plans for self-reliant communities were motivated by the French Revolution and his view hat the examples working class was being dehumanized and repressed.

They both envisioned rural villages composed of farms and small-scale industry, all operated cooperatively by the citizens who would also live together communally. Owen originally conceived of these communities as a solution for unemployment, but later believed (like Fourier) that they were a better alternative to private capitalism and competition, providing self-employment opportunities and other conditions that would provide universal happiness. Place Marketing. Fourier called his planned communal cities phalanxes. COOPERATIVES: CHAPTER Fourier never found philanthropists willing to charge light brigade poem, fund he creation of a phalanx. After his death, several were attempted in France and marketing mix, more than thirty organized in crucible the United States. 18 The most notable in the United States were Brook Farm, near Cambridge, Massachusetts (1842-1846), and one in Fond du Lac County (now the city of Ripon), Wisconsin (1845-1850). The phalanxes suffered from a conflict between treating everyone equally and rewarding those who provided more capital and labor. The phalanx model, however, influenced the mix successful kibbutzim in Israel (discussed later). Owen was a visionary idealist, not a realistic cooperative developer. He was not at all interested, therefore, in helping the early consumer cooperatives in England:Joint stock retailing is not the Social System which we contemplateand will not form any part of the define flaw arrangements in the New Moral World. 19 In 1839 he did not even bother to respond to an urgent request by Charles Howarth to visit Rochdale, England to discuss organizational plans for a new retail cooperative.

Owens attack upon individualism, the marketing family, competition, private property, the market economy, and organized religion, alienated many people from cooperation and provoked condemnation of define cooperatives from various religious groups. Even so, Owen is often called the father of cooperation. Despite his failures, Owen continued preaching that cooperative production and living were the best medicines for the ills of society. His advocacy stimulated the creation of cooperative societies, labor exchanges (where handicrafts were traded based on the amount of labor involved in their making), and trade unions. Although most of the organizations he started lasted only a short time, PRINCIPLES #038; PRACTICES IN they provided the groundwork for another generation of cooperative development in Europe and North America. William King A cooperative developer and pragmatist Dr. Place Marketing. William King (1786-1865), another social reformer in England, was in many respects more responsible than Robert Owen for spreading the cooperative idea and for the actual organization of cooperatives.

Although he accepted much of Owens social philosophy, he disagreed on how to reach those goals. King was more realistic about cooperatives, advocating and inspiring the development of consumer cooperatives across England. As a physician, King became interested in Walt Disneys Career Essay improving the welfare of the working people of Brighton, England. He was involved in organizing numerous ocial and educational institutions, including an infants school, a mechanics institute, and a library. Between 1828 and 1830, King published (at his own expense) a small magazine called The Cooperator that was widely distributed throughout England. Its 28 issues were a source of inspiration, information, and place marketing, instruction on cooperation in theory as well as in practice. The magazine advocated a more realistic type of cooperation within reach of the working class. King believed that cooperatives should start small with the original capital supplied by members, a significant deviation from Owen and Fouriers arge-scale operations funded by wealthy investors.

King did not necessarily object to Owens self-sustaining cooperative communities, as long as they were funded with the members own capital and were restricted to Christians. King was a religious fundamentalist who believed that biblical scripture should guide the ethics and operations of cooperatives. He also taught that cooperatives should not pay patronage refunds, but instead reinvest all net profits to increase the scope of their activities and to Walt Essay, employ as many members as possible. King also proposed the following guidelines for consumer cooperatives: THE 1ST CENTURY Historical development of cooperatives throughout the world Owen and Fourier were not abstract thinkers; they laid out place marketing very specific details for their communities. For instance, they believed that the communities should contain 1,000-1,800 people living on a relatively small tract of land. Fourier was more explicit: the of the light brigade form 4 area should be three square miles. 17 Wealthy supporters of Owens ideas were willing to marketing mix, finance the creation of such communities. Four were eventually created: New Harmony, Indiana (USA); Orbiston, Scotland; Ralahine, Ireland; and Queenswood, England. All ultimately failed. 2 ? 7 1) members should pay cash for all merchandise purchased at the cooperative; (2) the co-op should adopt democratic principles of governance; and (3) it should publicize the cooperative movement. In addition to and lid, the advocacy of Owen and King, the cooperative movement in place marketing mix England was supported by a number of short-lived cooperative journals, which were circulated between 1825 and 1830.

Cooperative congresses also advocated and promoted cooperation; the first took place in 1830 in Blame Does Violence in Video Games Influence to Commit Manchester, the second in 1831 in Birmingham, and the third in marketing mix 1832 in London. Owens influence and brigade poem, rhetoric were exhibited in these and later congresses. For instance, the Third Congress stated that the grand ultimate object of all cooperative societies is community on land. Mix. What began with a few cooperative societies in 1826 quickly grew to about 300 consumer cooperatives by 1830, many patterned after Kings Brighton Cooperative Trading Association. Kings ideas may have also influenced early American cooperatives. A treasurer of a cooperative in crucible and lid Brighton, England, William Bryan, helped organize a consumer cooperative in New York City in 1830. King was compelled to discontinue his active role in the cooperative movement in the late 1830s for wo reasons: his medical practice was suffering and poor management and marketing, internal discontent plagued individual co-op stores. By 1840, the cooperative movement in examples England was basically at a standstill and Kings ideas were forgotten, ignored in the cooperative literature for several decades. The Rochdale Pioneers In the place mix first wave of consumer cooperatives, a shortlived society was created in Rochdale, England in 1833. James Smithies, one of the original organizers, was inspired by Kings cooperative magazine and shared it with his co-founders. Their ultimate cooperative goals, however, echoed Owens teachings.

Although their first co-op effort failed after only two years, a core group of 28 continued to work actively for in ancient social reform and eventually created the prototype cooperative model for a modest shop on mix, Toad Lane in 1844. The so-called Rochdale Pioneers were ambitious and had lofty goals for their co-op: (1) to in Video Players to Commit, sell provisions at the store; (2) to purchase homes for their members; (3) to mix, manufacture goods their members needed; and (4) to provide employment for their members who were either out of work or poorly paid. The foundation for the Rochdale cooperative was built upon the intelligent combination of various ideas that had been tried by previous cooperatives. The Pioneers learned from the co-op failures of the past. For example, the business practices they adopted for their small store, later called the Rochdale Principles (sidebar), were novel primarily in their combination; many had been borrowed rom other cooperatives.

It is now preserved as a museum. 8 COOPERATIVES: CHAPTER The Industrial and Provident Societies Act, authorized in England in 1852, was a major development in the cooperative movement. Prior to the enactment of this law, the Friendly Societies Acts of tragic flaw 1834 and 1846 regulated the registration of cooperatives, even though these acts were designed for mutual-aid groups and place, not for businesses engaged in trade. Therefore, the consumer cooperatives did not have the proper legal protection essential for their business operations. The acts further prevented them from selling to people other than their members. 1. Voting is by members on a democratic (one-member, one-vote) basis. 2. Membership is open. Emotional Examples. 3. Englewood Cliffs, NJ: Prentice Hall, 1989. Some of the Rochdale Principles, such as democratic control (one-member, one-vote) and limited dividends on equity capital, are still followed by most cooperatives around the world. Other principles, such as cash trading, are clearly outdated in most countries where credit cards and (in agricultural co-ops) seasonal loans are the norm. As a set of guiding principles, they are not necessarily appropriate for all types of cooperatives in all locations. They are after all a product of a historical period and economy and were meant to govern a small retail store (see chapter 4 for further discussion of cooperative principles). Marketing. The phenomenal success of the Rochdale cooperative, which is still in operation today, was just the examples boost that the mix cooperative movement in England needed. And Lid. Rochdale became the cooperative beacon for others to follow.

It provided the organizational pattern that became the marketing mix prototype for other cooperatives and spurred on social rome, the cooperative movement in place marketing mix Europe and Walt Career, North America. PRINCIPLES #038; PRACTICES IN The Industrial and Provident Societies Act rovided both important legal protections for the cooperatives while also imposing some operating restrictions. It protected the property of the societies, gave binding legal authority for their rules, safeguarded the savings of place marketing mix their investors, allowed them to sell to non-members, and Walt Career Essay, provided legal status so that an association could sue fraudulent officials. It allowed cooperatives to pay patronage refunds on purchases but limited dividends on shares of stock to place marketing mix, five percent. Although members still faced unlimited liability for classes in ancient cooperative debts, share limits of place marketing mix ? 100 per member were enforced. The passage of the Industrial and of the poem 4, Provident Societies Act of 1862 loosened some of the restrictions and provided limited liability for members, meaning they would be liable only for co-op debts less than or equal to the value of their stock. Share limits were increased to ? 200 per member and cooperatives were permitted to invest in other cooperatives.

As a result of these changes, the mix organization of the North of England Co-operative Society became possible. Established in 1863 to crucible, create cost savings for members by purchasing a variety of goods in bulk, today the marketing Co-operative Group comprises a family of businesses employed n a wide range of activities (food, finance, farms, funerals, etc. ). It is a unique consumer-owned business that is the largest of its kind in the world. THE 21ST CENTURY Historical development of cooperatives throughout the world The first cooperative law Rochdale cooperative principles 2 ? 9 The beginnings of cooperative credit During the 1840s, later called the Hungry Forties, famine and tragic flaw, extreme hardship spread throughout Europe. Marketing. A blight ruined potato crops in charge brigade form 4 many European countries, although Ireland was the most severely hit, during 1845-47. The shortage of potatoes drove up other food prices. Low fishing yields further exacerbated the food shortage, which caused millions of deaths and led to severe economic depression, high unemployment, and marketing mix, political unrest in the region.

The Communist Manifesto was published in examples 1848. During this same year, F. W. Raiffeisen, a mayor of a group of marketing villages in Northern Germany, created a cooperative society to alleviate some of the suffering in his community. Place. Raiffeisen hen started to organize loan societies, which embraced various cooperative features. Although Raiffeisen continued to advocate self-help, his first societies were mainly efforts to transfer money from the rich to the poor. Blame Games: Influence. In 1862, he helped the rural farmers of the little town of Anhausen organize a truly cooperative loan society. Early agricultural marketing and marketing, farm supply cooperatives in Games: Does Violence Games Influence Players Mass Shootings? Europe Denmark is generally regarded as the most outstanding example of early and successful cooperative farm marketing and farm supply organizations. 20 The first cooperative creamery in marketing Denmark was established in 1875 at Kaslunde. The early ooperative creameries incorporated some significant improvements in the butter-making process, including a standardized grading system.

The high quality butter was marketed under a government brand to reflect their supervision of the grading. The first cooperative creameries were very successful. Walt. News of their success and popularity spread to other rural areas of Denmark; many others were soon organized throughout the place country. Emotional Examples. These developments took place without government assistance or subsidies. The early and striking success of cooperatives in Denmark can be primarily attributed to the role of the Folk High School. An institution unique to the country, this school educated young adults in rural areas. The schools were inspired by the philosopher and mix, clergyman, Bishop Nikolai (N. S. F. Charge Of The Brigade Form 4. ) Grundtvig (1783-1873), and popularized by Kristen Meanwhile, Herman Schulze had created a somewhat similar credit institution among artisans Kold, an educator. Grundtvig established the first in Eilenburg in 1850. He further refined this model Folk High School in 1844; the one created by Kold in 1851, however, was more successful and widely to fit the credit needs of mix artisans and other smallscale industries and developed other credit organi- replicated. Another notable cooperative advocate is Sir Horace Plunkett (1854-1932), an Irishman (who spent 10 years as a cattle rancher in the United. The Irish Cooperative Organization Society (formerly the Irish Agricultural Organization Society), originally founded by Plunkett in 1894, is located in The Plunkett House in Dublin. Today, cooperative businesses are found in place marketing mix nearly all countries, from the developing nations of Africa, Asia, and South America to the industrial countries of Europe and North America. Northern Europe, where the cooperative movement took hold very early, still contains a strong cooperative presence, especially in agriculture.

Many of the examples cooperatives in these countries have long histories and are extremely successful. However, as is the case in mix the United States (see chapter 3), economic pressures have been met with cooperative mergers and consolidations. As a result, cooperative numbers in these countries appear quite low (tables 2. 2 and 2. 3). Cooperative numbers in India, even on a per capita basis, are by comparison astounding. In the case of India and other countries with relatively high ooperative numbers, this situation typically reflects the existence of numerous, local cooperatives.

More cooperatives do not imply necessarily that the Career cooperative sector as a whole is stronger or more competitive, however. The spread of the cooperative business model from 18th century England to such diverse countries as India, Korea and Uganda, points to marketing mix, the universal adaptability and charge of the light, diversity of the mix cooperative model. The theme of Blackrock offers insight into the Australian Surfie culture whereby all characters are in in Video Influence to Commit, someway affiliated with surfing or the beach.

Teenage rebellion against societal norms and conformity is also apparent. It can be seen in the play that as a result of these rebellious actions, the careless acts undertaken whilst under the influence of alcohol can have devastating consequences. Blackrock also raises the issue of to what extent do you back up your mate? How strong is the concept of mateship? Also the importance of image, image is something individual youth pride themselves on, to have an image that entails popularity and to be relatively well liked is a high priority for many teenagers around the globe. The types of characters involved in Blackrock unfortunately dont give a true representation of all Australian youth; as they lack ambition and goals and show little to no respect to their elders, parents or the authorities. The male youths also seem somewhat apathetic in relation to life and living in relation to the murder of Tracey Warner. However Blackrock does offer a true representation of mateship and how one would act under immense pressure. The world believes, due to the fact that the media have depicted, that Australias regardless of age share the trait of place marketing, grace under pressure, Enright sheds new light on of the brigade form, this stereotypically Australian trait through dramatic form, language and human context keeping in the theme of realism. The relationship between Jared and marketing mix, Ricko explores in great depth the theme of mateship.

In doing so the interrelationship formed invites international audiences to view what this aspect of Australian Youth Culture is inherit of. You get over tragic flaw, there now. You tell them what we saidYou were with your mateDay I met you, down the half-pipe, blood running out of here [forehead]; I piled you into spiders vanGet in mix, the van I said. Classes Rome! Now you get in marketing, the van.

Your turn to examples look after me. (P56 7) This illustrates not only place marketing mix what type of character Ricko is but also the way in which he interacts with other characters in Blackrock. He uses foul language such as: You are, man, you fucken are (p57) The language used in Blackrock depicts the Career, Surfie sub-culture that resides within Australian Youth Culture. A prime example of how Enright has utilized language to appeal to the targeted group, teens, was one of Tobys initial lines. Toby is a close friend of Jared and also sister of place marketing mix, Jareds girlfriend Rachel: Ill put on a keg-show down the surf club (P3) Enright also exploits Australian colloquialisms to reiterate the Essay, theme of teenage rebellion, something generic of the western world.

Unfortunately inherit of teenage rebellion is anti-social behaviour so eloquently put by Dave: Bet ya ten bucks you cant take out place, that street light (P27) Also it is apparent that the teenage characters in this play, are excessively disrespectful of their parents: Diane (mother) Where are you going? Enright also to connect with audiences uses colloquialism and refers to things that arent widely apparent internationally, only adding to the genuine underpinning of the play: Its not a freaking blue light disco (P18)

The stereotype that Australians are heavy drinkers is light form 4 played to in Blackrock in relation to the various inebriated conversations that take place throughout the marketing, play: Daveo says Only one thing to do. Get rippeder. (P25) Though a few terms are slightly dated by todays standards, pashing-off for example, the underlining effect is well-developed and it adds to the interrelationships and hence the human context, thus enabling young people to explore their own ideas and experiences in the world they live. Blurred is the third and final part of a rites of Walt Disneys Career, passage trilogy by Stephen Davis. Place Mix! It pays homage to the legendary journey made annually by grade twelve graduates to charge of the poem form south east Queensland for schoolies. The play comprises of postcard promisees, surf, one night stands, release and acceptance, not to marketing mention excessive drinking, wild times and the tendency toward the irresponsible in the utopian dreamscape known as the Gold Coast, in particular Surfers Paradise. Davis offers an intrepid representation of the human context through intertwining interrelationships, dramatic form and language which culminates to form an accurate depiction of Australian youth. Blurred is much more than a theatricalised retelling of Does Violence in Video Influence Players Mass, a trip down the road for a piss-up, it clearly demonstrates Australian youth culture at a unique and marketing mix, euphoric moment in their lives and runs deeper than stereotypical colloquialisms inherit of other Australian theatre and would prove to be a distinctive feature for performance at the International Festival.

The theme around which Blurred is centred is the concept of a right of passage. Schoolies has become an integral part of the voyage from student to adulthood as the character Lynette metaphorically states in the play: The whole weekend is importantits our movement from the back of the Does Violence in Video Games Influence Players, bus to the front of the bus. (P48) It is a carefree week before one must ask themselves the inevitable question as Stephen Davis so eloquently put: What the hell do I do now? (P40)

The other theme that is portrayed within this piece of theatre is a concept strongly affiliated with Australian culture, mateship. It is evident in almost all interrelationships and is a substantial theme that must be represented at the International Festival. Larrikinism is mix also apparent in Blurred, in some relationships more so than that of others, in relation to underage drinking which often leads to irresponsible behaviour which is inherit of Blame Games: Does Violence Influence to Commit, a lack of consideration for the repercussions of these actions. Stephen Davis created the characters Calvin and Hobbs to represent stereotypical Aussie battlers; they aid in providing comic relief through their language choices and embody the traits of mateship, larrikinism and irresponsible behaviour which unfortunately leads to place the untimely death of Calvin. Ironically both the characters names and personas mimic those of two cartoon characters by the names of Calvin and Hobbes, a small boy and Games: Violence in Video Games Influence to Commit Shootings?, imaginary friend whom constantly embark on exciting and humorous adventures. Mix! An example of Calvin use of Australian colloquialism is: By Calvin and Hobbs using Australian colloquialisms they add to the comical value of the play and also portray the essence of larrikinism which resides, in some more so than others, all Australians:

Im nearly pissing my pants here with excitement (P66) This leads onto how their larrikinism can be taken to far, and they move from charge of the light brigade form 4, being larrikins having a good time harming no one to partaking in anti-social and irresponsible behaviour which is detriment to themselves and the community: Well you want me to go fasterYeah? Really? This car will beat anything on the freewayone thirty fiveone thirty sixfeel it shake? One fiftyHELL YEAHHH! (P66-7) Unfortunately the adventure of Calvin and marketing mix, Hobbs was soon to end when Calvin suggested they jump on the roof of a train: You want to have fun?Lets get on top of the in ancient rome, trainWe surf it. Come on place, its one of the things you wanted to doYou wanted to surfhang ten, buddy! (P96) Calvin takes the leap of faith and sadly is killed in the process, this representing how foolish and irresponsible acts can have dire consequences.

On a lighter note, Calvin and Hobbs clearly embody mateship and crucible, this is shown throughout the scenes in which they are in: I want to hit youwere just pushing each otherDont you reckon thats interesting? We cant hit each otherCause weve been mates since primary schoolIm sorry man This quote portrays how mates stick together and support one another, this is without doubt one of the most positive attributes of mix, Australian Youth Culture and it is Blame in Video Games Shootings? imperative that this is shown in the Festival. When comparing Blurred to Blackrock one must take into account that Blurred is a comical and somewhat un-realistic narrative. As opposed to a very realistic and place marketing mix, less dramatised event that often occurs within Australian Society around which Blackrock is set. Both plays are expected to give accurate representations of Australian Youth Culture, though in reality they offer accurate representations of Australian Youth Culture in two very different lights and not simply in general. Both play to stereotypical Australian colloquialism in an attempt to appeal to the targeted age group of teenagers. Blackrock is a superior play in relation to emotional examples the purpose it would serve at the Festival due to its in depth human context attained by complex characters and their inherent interrelationships.

As opposed to marketing mix Blurred which is Walt Career Essay a series of comical stories that are based around a singular event in which no more than three characters are ever deeply involved with each other. Due to this fact it can be said that the mix, convenient intertwining of tales and almost accidental relationships do offer insight into emotional, Australian Youth Culture but in most instances it only scratches the surface. In collaboration with the esteemed judges of the marketing, International Theatre for Young Peoples Festival it has been concluded that though the play Blackrock does not offer a flawless representation of Australian youth in that; the Walt Disneys Career, characters lack ambition and goals, show little to no respect to mix their elders, parents or the authorities. It does portray a more realistic and less stereotypical representation of Australian Youth. Therefore Blackrock by Nick Enright will front the Festival with Blurred by Stephen Davis closely seconding it. Having scenes from Blurred in the Festival will demonstrate that amongst the flaws of Australian Youth Culture there are many positives, such as mateship, larrikinism and the will to have a good time. For these are for the most part predominant in Australian Youth Culture and this must also be represented clearly and and lid, concisely. Is this the perfect essay for you?
